Introduction

Being with Patients helps healthcare professionals to empathise and interact more effectively with patients and their families.

It is a unique and interactive programme developed by Brigid Reid (Consultant Nurse, East Lancashire Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust) in conjunction with Cragrats Ltd.

The Problem

Nationally the concerns and complaints about people’s poor experiences in the NHS are well documented. Brigid and her colleagues at East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust recognised a need for staff to better understand patients’ hospital experiences to equip them to improve practice.

The Solution

Being with Patients ‘empowers staff to understand what it really means to be a patient’. It utilises a range of techniques (dramatised case studies, simulated patients, new video technology, and experiential exercises, etc.) to demonstrate how staff behaviours and attitudes, however subtle, can positively or negatively influence the patient experience.

“The course really makes you think about what you do with patients…”

Being with Patients also equips staff with a renewed emotional connection to the people who are patients and relatives, and the confidence and skills to change practice.

“…I’ve been a qualified nurse for over 20 years, I now feel I am giving and receiving so much more within my role”.

The Process

Early in the development of the programme, Brigid and her Trust recognised the need to call on TrusTECH’s experience to help protect and take forward the work. TrusTECH negotiated an agreement between the Trust and CragRats Ltd to enable the company to deliver the course. Brigid also asked a TrusTECH Technology Manager to sit on the programme’s evaluation and development steering group.

More recently, TrusTECH has managed the development of a collaboration agreement between the Trust and company, so that Being with Patients can be delivered as a franchise by trained facilitators at other Trusts.
