Introduction

The Certificate in Cognitive Rehabilitation trains staff in the management of patients with frontal lobe syndrome in high secure units.

The Problem

Although treatment for patients with frontal lobe syndrome already existed, Dr Jonathan Rogers (Head of Forensic Neurorehabilitation Services, Mersey Care NHS Trust) identified that the care of this group of patients could be greatly improved by equipping staff with the appropriate skills and interpersonal techniques to effectively engage with the patients.

The Solution

Dr Rogers designed the course as part of his Doctoral studies at the University of Middlesex. The frontal lobes are essential for higher cognitive abilities such as planning, implementing and evaluating actions. Frontal lobe impairment often causes cognitive difficulties including problems with working memory.

The Certificate in Cognitive Rehabilitation is a training programme involving role play and other interactive activities that engages individuals with frontal lobe disorders in functional, intrinsically motivating activities to improve their treatment and management.

The Trust also provides a train-the-trainer course to allow accredited trainers to run the Certificate in Cognitive Rehabilitation in their own organisations.

The Process

Dr Rogers approached TrusTECH for advice about how he could make the course available to other organisations.

To do this, TrusTECH initially clarified the ownership of the intellectual property associated with the course and provided the Trust with advice about copyright protection of the course materials. A licence agreement template was also prepared by TrusTECH to enable Mersey Care NHS Trust to licence other organisations (with trained facilitators) to deliver the course.

More recently, TrusTECH provided Pathfinder funding to the Trust to further develop the course.
