Introduction

This service helps patients with a fear of falling by providing information on the effects of fear and how they can help themselves.

The Problem

A fear of falling can greatly affect a patient’s quality of life and can lead to such problems as unmanageable levels of anxiety, depression, low confidence, lack of independence and an inability to engage in social activities.

The Solution

The Fear of Falling Booklet was created by a Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Psychologist at Bolton, Salford and Trafford Mental Health NHS Trust. Consisting of text and pictures, the booklet is suitable for any patient with a fear of falling and includes information about the effects of the fear and advice on avoidance, relaxation techniques and how to handle anxiety. The booklet can be given to patients for future reference.

The booklet can also be used in any clinical/community setting or as an adjunct to therapy, but is best used by a professional with some knowledge of this subject area. Use of the booklet will lead to a reduction in the number of sessions that a patient requires with a psychologist, this will in turn increase the patient’s confidence and reduce levels of anxiety and depression. This will have a positive effect on the patient’s broader wellbeing.

The Process

Bolton, Salford and Trafford Mental Health NHS Trust approached TrusTECH for assistance with promoting adoption of the booklet among NHS Trusts. TrusTECH distributed information about the service via the Service Innovation Bulletin and website. An electronic copy of the booklet, in pdf format, has been developed with assistance from Salford PCT and Salford City Council.

To date approximately, 20 Trusts have approached TrusTECH expressing an interest in the Fear of Falling Booklet.
