Information Governance Workbook
Introduction
The Information Governance (IG) Workbook helps Trusts to manage and integrate the information governance standards, improve their risk profile and manage evidence within a single Microsoft Excel® file.
The Problem
Trusts are obliged (under the Core Standards for Better Health [C9, C13b&c]) to improve their risk profile and reduce complaints, claims and litigation. This is becoming increasingly important, as patients become more involved in choosing hospitals for treatment and the service as a whole.
The Solution
The IG Workbook developed by Steve Brewster, Information Governance Manager (Mersey Care NHS Trust) enables Trusts to compare their progress against a particular standard and their performance from the previous year. Each standard has a separate spreadsheet to report against individual attainments and each spreadsheet is followed by a report and graphs for that standard.
Information Governance Standards:
- Information Governance Management
- Confidentiality and Data
- Protection Assurance
- Secondary Uses Assurance
- Corporate Records Assurance
The workbook automatically calculates the risk for each requirement and highlights the risks, in order of severity, using a colour-coded system. The risk register is automatically updated with this information, to inform the work, decisions and reporting systems for the Trust’s Risk Management Team, Caldicott Guardian, Trust Board, etc.
In addition to helping Trusts work towards the Core Standards for Better Health, the IG Workbook saves staff time and reduces duplication of files.
The Process
Mersey Care NHS Trust approached TrusTECH for assistance with encouraging adoption of the workbook within other NHS Trusts.
TrusTECH distributed information about the IG Workbook via its Service Innovation Bulletin, website and Service Innovation Showcase (December 2006).
To date, the IG Workbook has been adopted by 15 Trusts and many more have expressed an interest in the workbook. Mental Health, Primary Care, Acute and Ambulance Trust versions of the workbook are available.
