Open Arts Pack
Introduction
The benefit of using the arts in the mental health sector is gaining increasing recognition as a tool for artists, mental health workers and mental health service users.
The Problem
Despite the rising profile of using arts in the mental health field, as well as the number of people looking to gain experience in this field, there is a limited pool of people with the relevant training and experience, due to the lack of growth in training provision.
The Solution
The Open Arts Pack seeks to rectify this by providing the necessary means for developing such a programme. It requires a programme co-ordinator (to provide administration and planning support), alongside a programme trainer and lead artists (to conduct the programme).
The pack is a flexible resource which offers the opportunity to train mental health workers in the skills needed to facilitate arts and mental health group work. It works by demonstrating theories and teaching healthcare professionals how to implement these into mental health and arts placement groups. This also allows service users to develop their own skills in a range of art forms. The programme places emphasis on practical arts experience over written work.
The Open Arts Pack provides a step-by-step guide for facilitators to run the programme, leading them through the relevant administration, materials and assessment procedures. The training can be accredited through the Open College Network (OCN) so learners can gain OCN credits in facilitating arts and mental health work.
The Process
The Open Arts Pack is was developed through the Connected project, developed in Oldham in 1998. After approaching Pavilion Publishing, the company responsible for producing the pack, Pennine Care NHS Trust approached TrusTECH for assistance.
TrusTECH reviewed and negotiated the legal agreement between Pennine Care NHS Trust and Pavilion, to ensure that the Trust received adequate recognition and reimbursement for its work.
Note. TrusTECH always recommends that NHS staff speak with it about an idea before they approach a third-party/company. This helps to ensure that the idea is adequately protected through legal (intellectual property) rights, preventing others from copying the idea and helps staff to negotiate the best deal possible for their Trusts.
