Sir Jimmy Savile funds TrusTECH inventors

Sir Jimmy Savile has generously donated £40,000 to two Manchester inventors to fund vital research into ways to combat MRSA.

Sir Jimmy said “I’m pleased to offer this window of opportunity to these great people. I’ve been involved with the NHS as a volunteer for over 40 years and MRSA is a nightmare for us all. When I read that the oils kill bugs in minutes - it’s definitely worth me giving £40,000.”

The inventors have found that essential oils are capable of killing MRSA and E.coli, as well as other bacteria and fungi, within minutes of contact and in May 2004 TrusTECH became involved with the project to help further the research.

In December, Jackie Stringer, Clinical Lead of Complementary Therapies at the Christie hospital and Dr Peter Warn of the University of Manchester announced that they had discovered that essential oils could kill the deadly MRSA bug - a discovery that stems from Jackie’s work with leukaemia patients where she uses aromatherapy to help in their treatment.

Staphylococcus aureus is a commonly occurring bacteria found on the skin. However methicilin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) is a strain of the bacteria that is resistant to some of the most powerful antibiotics available. Researchers believe that essential oils make effective antimicrobials as they are composed of a complex mix of naturally occurring chemicals – which the bacteria find hard to resist.

"We are absolutely delighted that Sir Jimmy Savile has decided to fund our work. His generous donation means that we can employ a research nurse to carry out a trial at the Christie Hospital in Manchester. We are going to start work on the trial as soon as possible", Dr Warn said.
