TrusTECH Backs Bid for Manchester Biomedical Research Centre

A partnership of Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Manchester is bidding to host one of five Biomedical Research Centres (BRCs) in England. The Trust’s innovation partner, TrusTECH , is backing the bid for the BRC which if successful would further build on the excellent research facilities and world-class research for which Manchester is both nationally and internationally renowned.

The partnership, between Central Manchester and Manchester Children’s University Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Manchester, is one of only six bids (and the only partnership outside of the ‘Golden Triangle’) short listed for the Department of Health Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre funding. Professor Dame Nancy Rothwell has been appointed Director designate of the Manchester BRC, and Professor Phil Baker as Deputy Director designate.

With world-class research facilities and networks (Britain’s only £0.5 billion university, a new £600 million hospital and strong NHS-university-industry collaborations) Manchester has huge potential to increase the volume of biomedical research, apply research outcomes to deliver innovation and excellence in clinical practice, and to build on the economy of the North West region.

The BRCs are being introduced nationally by the Department of Health to accelerate the scale and pace of the translation of science into new healthcare treatment and diagnostic services. Ultimately, the centres aim to drive innovation in healthcare and translate advances in biomedical research into patient benefits.

TrusTECH is also supporting the application by the Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospital Trust and the University of Liverpool to become one of England’s flagship research centres for Microbial Disease
