TrusTECH® receives £675,000 funding to support healthcare innovations in the North West region

NHS Trusts across the North West region are set to benefit from the injection of £675,000 to develop innovative medical devices and procedures to improve NHS patient care.

The new funds were announced this week by the Science and Innovation Minister, Lord Sainsbury. TrusTECH® was amongst 29 bidders that have been awarded cash from the Government’s Public Sector Research Exploitation (PSRE) initiative to help turn research into a commercial reality.

TrusTECH is part of a national network of innovation hubs set up by the Department of Health and co-funded by the Department of Trade and Industry (Office of Science and Technology) and the Regional Development Agencies. TrusTECH provides services to over 60 NHS organisations and is based at Manchester Royal Infirmary with offices in Liverpool and Preston.

Working with regional partners in universities, research organisations and the commercial sector, TrusTECH supports local NHS inventors to develop innovative ideas for improved medical equipment and services.

The new funds will be used to expand activities across the North West to protect and fully exploit new technology and devices, with the added opportunities that manufacture and commercial development can bring for regional businesses.

Dr Maire Smith, National Director of Technology and Product Innovation for the Department of Health said,

“The role of the NHS Innovation Hubs is to ensure that good NHS ideas stay within the NHS so that patients, inventors and their Trusts get the full benefit. I’m delighted that the work of the TrusTECH has been recognised through this funding award and I look forward to North West region reaping the benefits of NHS innovation.
