Healthcare Industry Study for MIDAS Investigates Drivers for Manchester Location

A research study designed and implemented by the TrusTECH commercial services team has recently concluded, providing an insight into the features that draw healthcare organisations to Greater Manchester.  The outcomes of the study, commissioned by Greater Manchester’s inward investment agency, MIDAS, will be used as a foundation to draw new healthcare businesses into the region.

Top of the list of attractions demonstrated by the study were: the world-class research facilities; excellent transport infrastructure; academic expertise and cost-effective accommodation offered by the areas.

Initial examination of local directories revealed that over 200 healthcare organisations are currently based in the city and its surrounding areas.  Of these, 28 companies representative of the various sectors identified (biomedical, associated healthcare, medical devices and support services) were approached to complete a short qualitative questionnaire, which formed the basis of the study.

David Blower, MIDAS Business Development Manager (Environmental Technologies and Services sector) commented that:“by exploring first-hand why so many healthcare businesses choose Greater Manchester, we can better tailor our approach to encourage further investment in the area”.

TrusTECH, the North West NHS Innovation Hub, was set up initially in 2001 to provide an innovation management and intellectual property service to NHS Trusts in the North West.“Utilising its healthcare knowledge and access to clinical expertise, the hub has expanded to manage and facilitate bespoke research and clinical projects on behalf of health-care related commercial and academic clients", explained Dr Bryan Griffiths, TrusTECH Business Development Manager. "The intention is to facilitate synergistic partnership between the region’s NHS organisations, industry and academia to ultimately improve healthcare provision”.
