Round one InnovateNoW winners invited into the Dragons' Lair
The first round of winners funded by the InnovateNoW awards, aimed at encouraging and spreading innovative practices and services in the NHS, were announced in December 2009.
Twenty One winners were announced overall; eleven for the Innovation Bursary Awards, and ten in the Innovation Sharing Awards category.
Of the 138 outline applications for the larger Enabling Change Awards, seven were invited to submit a full application and the judges recommended that five should be considered for funding.
These five NHS teams proposing innovative ways to improve healthcare services were amongst eight teams who pitched to the ‘dragons’ – a combination of senior NHS managers and business people – with the aim of winning financial backing from the £1.9m regional innovation fund for healthcare.
Three of these applicants were awarded funding, alongside three further projects successful at the event.

Second round winners announced
Fourteen projects have so far won funding under the second round of the awards. Nine of these will receive an Innovation Bursary Award while the remaining five have been given an Innovation Sharing Award.
An announcement was also made in mid-February on the round 2 Enabling Change Awards - for which the application is a two-stage process. Those selected to go through to the second stage have been invited to submit a full application by 31 March 2010. These applications will be reviewed by a panel of judges and those shortlisted will be invited to pitch their ideas at a second Dragons' Lair event on 28 May, before a panel of senior NHS managers and business figures.
