Liverpool Wins Bid for National Research Base

The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Liverpool partnership has been awarded up to 15 million pounds to create the UK’s centre of excellence in Microbial Diseases.  The centre is a significant development for the North West and the healthcare sector as a whole.

Peter Winstanley, Professor of Clinical Pharmacology at the University of Liverpool and Consultant Physician at Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen, explains that “the pioneering research into the detection and treatment of infectious disease will provide benefits to millions of people in the UK and untold numbers throughout the rest of the World.”

The North West is already home to a strong biomedical research base and a wealth of healthcare-related industries.  TrusTECH – the NHS organisation that helps the NHS across the North West develop and commercialise innovative technologies and services – fully supported the Liverpool bid.

“With its leading research base in microbiology and pharmacology, Liverpool is an excellent choice for the BRC specialising in Microbial Diseases.  This ground-breaking initiative will present exciting opportunities for innovation in healthcare and TrusTECH looks forward to working with its team in the future ”, Dr Richard Deed (TrusTECH Innovation Unit Manager).
