A new iPhone app for assessing burns patients

A New iPhone Application for assessing Burn Patients

Congratulations to Dr Rowan Prichard Jones, Chris Seaton and Professor Paul McArthur of St Helens and Knowsley Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust in winning a HEIC ‘Excellence in Innovation’ award at the recent Transferring Knowledge Transforming Care event held inWigan. The award recognises and encourages the spread of innovative practices to support a sustainable culture of healthcare improvements.

The team developed a piece of software which incorporates the Lund & Browder Chart and the Parkland Formula; which determine the total body surface area burned and a amount of fluid to be administered over the first 24 hours post-burn. The software will be freely available to users to download to their iPhone.

Conventional paper methods of calculating resuscitation fluids can take up to fifteen minutes and there is the potential of for human error with final calculations. Rowan says his innovative process can derive the amount of resuscitation fluids required and assess the patient’s burn within a two-minute period, reducing the risk of miscalculation which could harm the patient.

Rowan is expecting a desktop version of the software to be available later next year with additional functionality available to the user.

TRUSTECH has supported Rowan in managing the Intellectual Property generated with his idea and will continue to support him in raising awareness of his product and to influence adoption by other NHS Trusts.
