READ ISSUE SIX NOW

This issue focuses on nutrition among the elderly, a topic of increasing importance in the wake of growing levels of old-age malnutrition. Contributors to this issue include:

  • Jane Alderdice, Therapy Services Manager/ Professional Lead for Dietetics at Central Manchester NHS Foundation Trust, who discusses the importance of good nutritional status for older people.
  • Siân Robinson, Professor of Nutritional Epidemiology at the MRC Lifecourse Epidemiology Unit, University of Southampton, who talks about promoting good nutrition in older age. Siân informs us of current studies looking to improve where and how we promote good nutrition in older adults.
  • Mathew Done, Owner and Founder of Slõ Drinks, who informs us of the problems which arise from dysphagia (swallowing difficulties). Elderly patients with dysphagia often change the consistency of fluids by adding thickener. Slõ Drinks offer safer to swallow and easy to prepare palatable drinks that are available for hydration, medication and recreational purposes.

This issue also examines research active hospices, the impact of trained volunteers for mealtime care in hospitals, oral care observations and a Cochrane Corner review on nutrition for healthy ageing.
