Innovation Agency wins Bionow Business Support Award

The Innovation Agency has won a prestigious award for its work with North West Coast businesses in the health care sector.

Their Commercial team was presented with the Business Support Award at the Bionow Awards, which recognise outstanding achievement and enterprise in the life sciences sector across the North of England.

The Innovation Agency is the Academic Health Science Network for the region, supporting businesses with innovations to benefit healthcare.  Their work is supported by the European Regional Development Fund and delivered with partners in Liverpool City Region; Warrington and Cheshire; and Lancashire and South Cumbria.

To date the team has engaged with more than 500 businesses and provided bespoke support to 81 companies, leading to:

  • 53 jobs safeguarded
  • 56 jobs created
  • 76 new products or services introduced
  • £5.8m further investment leveraged

Innovation Agency Chief Operating Officer Lorna Green said: “It is fantastic to win this award, not just on behalf of our team but also in recognition of the partner organisations which help us to deliver bespoke support to small and medium size businesses with innovations to improve health and social care.”

One of the businesses being supported by the Innovation Agency is Liverpool-based health technology producer Damibu, whose chief executive Dave Burrows said: “Since connecting with the Innovation Agency I’ve been introduced to an ever widening network of people in the NHS, social care, universities, the voluntary sector and industry.

“This relationship has had a huge impact on our business; I was recently selected as an NHS Innovation Accelerator Fellow, to promote our health monitoring app, CATCH. This follows five years of working in the health sector with a range of support from the Innovation Agency including networking, introductions, help with fund applications and promotion at their regular digital health events.

“The Bionow Business Support Award is well deserved and I congratulate the team for winning the recognition.”

The Innovation Agency has helped businesses to secure health focused funding including Small Business Research Initiative Health, Innovate UK and other opportunities such as the NHS National Innovation Accelerator programme.

The support has also led to European funding and collaboration partners for small businesses. In the last year alone, this has led to two businesses each receiving €50,000, to fund commercialisation and two organisations receiving over €1m each to procure innovative technologies – Liverpool City Council and Liverpool Heart and Chest NHS Foundation Trust.

Investment has been made by the Innovation Agency to help improve regional infrastructure for innovation – creating jobs, developing skills, attracting research funding and inward investment over the long term. Pump prime funding has enabled seven centres to leverage over £100m additional funding from sources including the NHS, universities, industry, EU and UK Government. These centres include Alder Hey Innovation Centre; Chorley Digital Park; and the Centre for Integrated Health Science in Chester.
