Fear of Falling Booklet
Bolton, Salford and Trafford Mental Health NHS Trust
This booklet has been created by a Clinical Psychologist and Assistant Psychologist. The booklet consists of text and pictures. It has been developed for any patient who has a fear of falling, their relatives and friends. The booklet includes information on the effects of the fear of falling and how each patient can help themselves (e.g. how to handle anxiety, avoidance and relaxation techniques).
The booklet can be introduced to the patient and left with them to refer to. It may also be used as an adjunct to therapy. The booklet can be used in any clinical/community setting, but is best used by a professional with some knowledge of falls awareness and/or fear of falling.
The expected benefits of the booklet include a reduction in the number of sessions that patients are required to attend with psychology professionals due to a fear of falling and patients should experience increased confidence and a reduction in levels of anxiety and depression. Fear of falling can also affect a patient’s independence and engagement in social activities, therefore by increasing confidence this booklet should have a positive effect on the patient’s broader quality of life.
Initial feedback from clients and staff using the booklet has been positive. A PDF copy of this booklet has been developed with assistance from Salford PCT and Salford City Council and is available on request.
