Through the eyes of future innovators

Pupils from three Salford schools recently participated in a two-day event that aimed to inspire a new generation of health and social care innovators.

‘The Innovation FACTor’ is an initiative run by social enterprise, Unlimited Potential, to encourage school-aged entrepreneurs to work together to develop solutions to improve people’s lives. The programme was commissioned by Salford Council and supported by Health Innovation Manchester and TRUSTECH.

The event’s aim was to provide young people from disadvantaged backgrounds with resilience and confidence to go out and succeed in the workplace once they finish their education; providing them with a realistic experience of developing ideas, group work, pitching and receiving feedback.

Health and wellbeing outcomes for young people are heavily influenced by their social backgrounds and educational experience and there is a clear gap between those from disadvantaged backgrounds and their more fortunate peers. Despite significant economic growth in Salford, many local residents have not benefited from this prosperity, which is something that the FACT (Fueling Ambition Creatively Together) aims to address.

FACT helps young people from to develop skills and learn how to improve their employment opportunities and entrepreneurial skillset, and this project focused on addressing health inequalities.

The ideas pitched included holographic GP appointments, a mental health app for teenagers and charms to help track family members with dementia. Keep an eye out for these innovations in the future!
