Opportunities
Improved Skin Graft Dressings
The Technology
Split-thickness skin grafts are routinely used following burn injuries, surgery for skin cancers and other traumas.
The preparation of ‘tie-over’ dressings that are used following skin graft surgery is time consuming and labour intensive, taking up a significant proportion of the surgeons time during the operation. This can have a significant impact on the successful uptake of the skin graft.
The resultant dressing limits access to the wound making it difficult for a nurse or surgeon to monitor the uptake of the graft, particularly at the initial stages of healing where early intervention can affect the success and final appearance of the graft.
The Opportunities
Following discussions with local plastic surgeons we believe the opportunity exists to develop improved skin graft dressings that overcome the disadvantages associated with existing dressings. This opportunity will be of interest to companies with expertise in:
- Medical textiles
- Specialist foams and adhesives
- Wound healing and scar reduction
