Radial Head and Neck Fracture Device

The Technology

Radial head fractures are common injuries and account for 33% of elbow fractures. Radial head and neck fractures occur in 50 to 60% of elbow dislocations. For displaced fractures open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) and salvage of the radial head are recommended, if possible.

Two surgeons at a North West NHS Trust have developed a device that helps to both maintain fracture reduction and the accurate placement of the fixation device.

The Advantages

  • A patient’s recover would be much quicker as their own bone could be salvaged and used, rather then a replacement radial head, even in difficult fractures.
  • Aid the surgeon in maintaining reduction and facilitates stable fixation.

The Potential Market

In England there were 3448 fractures of the proximal end of the radius in 2005/06 (Hospital Episode Statistics data) for which the device would prove beneficial.

The Opportunities

We are seeking a commercial partner experienced in the development and sale of orthopaedic devices.  A licence arrangement or a collaborative development project, are both possibilities.
