Elcetronic Pathology Handbook

The Technology

The Electronic Pathology Handbook is a web based tool that allows the easy access of up-to-date information regarding pathology services within an organisation, such as a NHS Trust.  This ensures that employees always have access to up to date guidance on the services available.

The Electronic Pathology Handbook was developed to replace the paper version of pathology handbooks.  These paper versions would normally be out of date within a number of weeks of being published due to changes in laboratory protocols or new services being added. These are often costly and time consuming for laboratories to produce.

The Electronic Pathology Handbook has been developed by a Pathology IT Manager/Consultant Clinical Scientist   in a large North West NHS Trust.  It has been fully implemented within the host NHS Trust for a number of years and has been very successful.

The Advantages

  • Contains far more information than a paper pathology handbook ever could
  • Is both an educational and clinical tool for medical, nursing and allied healthcare professionals, providing a one-stop-shop for pathology services
  • As new sections are developed or others updated the electronic nature of the handbook ensures
that users will always be accessing the most up-to-date guidance available
  • Allows important information, such as changes in services to be highlighted and easily accessed

The Potential Market

The Electronic Pathology Handbook can be used in both NHS and non-NHS laboratories for any pathology discipline including microbiology, immunology and clinical chemistry.
It is envisaged the Electronic Pathology Handbook would be sold as a shell, which could be populated by individual laboratories so that it becomes a specialised resource for a particular organisation.
