The Technology

The use of non-invasive respiratory support is increasing. An alternative method to traditional intubation is Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) in which air/oxygen is applied under pressure to the airway to aid breathing and improve lung function. Long-term use of standard CPAP masks leads to discomfort in patients and can cause pressure sores in extreme cases.A consultant anaesthetist in a Northwest NHS Trust has designed an improved mask for greater patient comfort..

The Advantages

  • Improved patient comfort.
  • Less claustrophobic for patients.
  • Inexpensive alternative to current masks.

The Potential Market

The use of CPAP as a tool for improving airway function is increasing in the UK and is widespread in the US, for example in the treatment of sleep apnea. Expensive low-profile CPAP masks are available in the US, which improve patient comfort and reduce the feeling of claustrophobia. The current technology describes a low-cost mask suitable for widespread use in ICU, other hospital departments and into the community, for example, via Outreach programmes.

The Opportunities

We are seeking a commercial partner to work with the consultant anaesthetist in the development of prototypes and manufacture of this innovation.
