Opportunities
The UriCone™
The Technology
Current methods of urine collection can be difficult, causing embarrassment to patients due to leakage. There is also a risk of sample contamination. Urine collection can be particularly difficult for female patients and for patients with impaired mobility. An NHS professional from the North West has designed an inexpensive, environmentally friendly, disposable device to ease urine collection which could alleviate these problems. Although designed with female patients in mind, the device can be used by both sexes. The device reduces the risk of sample contamination therefore enabling more representative collections. The device could also be adapted to incorporate biochemical tests.
The Advantages
- Disposable device, therefore there is less chance of sample contamination.
- Low cost, environmentally friendly materials may be used.
- Simple design eases urine. collection particularly for female patients and patients with impaired mobility with less risk of embarrassing leakages.
- The device can be adapted to incorporate various biochemical tests.
The Potential Market
Collection of urine for testing is one of the most common methods of diagnosing certain conditions or diseases. Common urine tests that are performed include tests for diabetes, pregnancy, kidney function and drug abuse. This device not only eases urine collection but may also be adapted to incorporate these types of tests. The potential market for this device is therefore very large with hospitals, GP practices, clinics and prisons in both the public and private sector likely to be interested.
The Opportunities
We are looking for a commercial partner with an interest in further developing the device.
