Smart Solutions for Healthcare

Finding innovations to shape the future of healthcare

Smart Solutions for Healthcare programme was the second in a series of programmes delivered by TRUSTECH, the North West NHS Innovation Service. The call to identify for new ways for the NHS to combat Cardiovascular Disease and Long Term Conditions closed in April 2011, and offered companies the opportunity to have their products and systems tested in a healthcare setting.

Smart Solutions for Healthcare was delivered by TRUSTECH, supported by NHS North West, NESTA, Northwest Development Agency, England’s Northwest, Manchester City Council, Manchester: Knowledge Capital, and New Economy through the Investment Fund Partnership.

The VibraTip by McCallan Medical

vtipbluePeripheral neuropathy (nerve damage) in the foot is a well-known complication of diabetes and can result in foot ulcers, loss of tissue and ultimately amputation of limbs. Normally, tests to detect neuropathy are carried out using a tuning fork and a monofilament to assess if patients can detect vibrations an touch stimuli.

The VibraTip was designed to overcome the limitations of tuning forks. It provides a consistent source of vibration at fixed amplitude so results are more reliable and recordable. The VibraTip is the size of a key fob and costs around £10, so is small and inexpensive enough for nurses or patients to keep in their pocket.
